Small systems have been defined by the IWA specialist group on SWWS as the systems that serve a population of up to 4,000 people equivalent (PE). Within this range, there are very small wastewater systems (one to ten families), medium small (50 to 500 PE) and large small (500 to 4000 PE) systems. Due to the size, many industrial water and wastewater systems can be included as small systems.

Every two years, IWA organizes a conference on SWWS and DEWSIN to bring together researchers, scientists and professionals working in the field of small and decentralized systems around the world. In this series, the two conferences to be held in Coimbatore will provide a platform for the participants to share their findings within a unique forum and thus help to tackle the water and wastewater problems in small systems that the world is facing now.

These two specialized conferences on SWWS and DEWSIN are jointly organized by the Centre for Water and Environmental Studies (CWES) of the Kumaraguru College of Technology, India and the Laboratory for Environmental Biotechnology (LBE) of the National Institute of Agronomic Research, France. It is supported by IWA, Indian Water Works Association (IWWA), French embassy, and Siruthuli, an Indian non-governmental organization.
